Discussion and Funshop Presenters

Deschooling and Unschooling the teen years

Unschoolers Evaluations

Both will be led by Kim Kucherer from York, PA

*Kim has 3 children-daughters Takara, 16 and Jacey, 11, and son Elan, 14. Kim has been unschooling (I call it "child led conversationalist life learning".) for 9 years and doing evaluations for 8 years.  She is a PA Certified Teacher and is able to evaluate elementary and secondary.  She has unschooled her son, who has special needs, and her youngest daughter from the beginning. Her oldest daughter went to Kindergarten and First grade in public school. Deschooling was and still is an issue with her oldest as she has many "rules" that still effect how she perceives learning. Kim will also do long distance evaluations. For more information on scheduling evaluations please call; 717-927-6396.

Unit Studies - having fun while learning!
presented by Lorrie Kelley

How Unit Studies can help you children learn a wide variety of things by choosing a theme and then finding a way to weave each subject into it. It works great with unschoolers as well as traditional home schoolers. It can be tailored any way you would like it. This can also be a very economical way to learn, if you use free, and low priced resources.

*Lorrie is mother to two wonderful young adults who were both home schooled/unschooled. Moving to Lancaster County, PA 11 years ago from the Boston area, as a single Mom, was a challenge, but one that she embraced and made the best out of. Unit Studies were her kids favorite way to “do school”.

Round table discussion on Single Parent Home/Unschooling
Led by Lorrie Kelley

We will talk about ways to teach your kids without having to spend a lot of money.
This will be an open discussion to talk about anything you have on your mind.

"Altered Books" presented by Mimi Shapiro

Participants in this hands-on workshop will cut, glue, write, color, do collage and more as they start with a book and create a portable art exhibit of their own! **You are asked to bring an old hardcover book along to complete this project. If you have some old magazines to share, that would also be very helpful!
Also, if you have anything in particular that you want to add to your "altered book, you may bring along items to use in the process. Here is a link showing altered books;

*Mimi Shapiro is an artist that loves travel, poetry and making books, altering books and the whole creative process. In 2007, she won Best in Mixed Media in the Manhattan Arts International "HerStory" competition. The winning piece was an altered book cover Changing Sky for which she used mixed media on antique book cover with wax and a found object. It was part of a series -- using old book covers, wax and found objects.
Mimi’s books are included in the National Museum of Women in the Arts in DC, Jaffe Book Arts Collection, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida; The Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete & Visual Poetry, Miami, Florida; Bienes Center for the Literary Arts, Fort Lauderdale, Florida and the Free Library of Philadelphia, PA - Jump Start - Launching an Artist Book Collection.   To view Mimi’s art go to:

"Modern Dance Fun"

In the Modern Dance workshop, Larissa will lead the group in how to express yourself through movement and dance. This will be a very fun and comfortable atmosphere where we will be moving our bodies through our emotions and life. Modern dance is a dance style that centers on a dancer's own interpretations instead of structured steps, as in traditional ballet dancing. Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines. It is not unusual for modern dancers to invent new steps for their routines, instead of following a structured code of technique. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes!

*Larissa is an 18 year old unschooler originally from Boston, MA, but now lives in Lancaster County, PA. She has been dancing since she was 5 years old and has explored all aspects of dance, taking several classes over the years. Larissa’s real passion is cooking and baking. She currently is a cake decorator at a local Bakery, but plans to have her own café in the near future.
